As a result of escalating costs of compensation from major fires, insurers now include specific clauses in their policies that all grease extraction plant and ducting is cleaned frequently by an accredited specialist company. With 25% of non-domestic fires being attributed to starting in kitchens, insurers are becoming fire risk prevention aware.

Under B&ES TR19 Standards it is recommended that inspections be carried out at regular intervals. Depending on the type and duration of cooking undertaken, this may be as frequent as monthly but, not exceeding 12 monthly. The Insurers Loss Prevention Council, working in conjunction with the B&ES specifies the following cleaning frequencies based on kitchen usage:

Under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO) it is the responsibility of companies and individuals for ensuring legal compliance. Insurers can and will ask for evidence that the TR19 and RRFSO is being complied with and specifically that any relevant warranties within their policies, are being met.
